At a reported £280k per week or £14.5m per year proposed new deal, ozil will become one of the highest-paid players in the world! That’s right, in the world.
He is already on an eye-watering wage but his new contract if true and indeed signed, will make him a true football big boy! Arsenal broke their transfer record 4years ago to acquire his services at a cost of between £38 to £42.5m depending on which sources you believe, however, his commitments and performances have been brought under scrutiny very frequently over the years. His record at Arsenal one may argue speaks for themselves, but making comparisons with other players in similar position reveals a different perspective.
Granted, based on his duties i.e initiating assaults and providing assists, when compared to other players, he has done ok. Stats also showed when he decides to compete for balls, he won 50% of the times which is same as other players in his category, however, his body language when the team down often has a negative effect on the team. One may argue again that in this respect, the manager should be calling him to order.
The main point of this article is his salary, there remained a question whether he deserves earning this amount! His current salary of £7.28m, compared with Philippe Coutinho’s £3.9, Dembele’s £4.16 and Eden Hazard’s £10.4m. One can say, Ozil’s current salary is either an overpayment or Coutinho is been underpaid by at least 50%. Other factors come into play when justifying Hazard’s salary which I may touch on later.
Another pressure point for Ozil is that, unlike Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard, there is no deluge of clubs scampering for his signature, apart from reported interest from Turkey which I don’t believe it’s the type of move he wants at this stage in his career. This point make the new proposed deal baffling, applying a simple demand and supply principle, lack of demand should lower your value? This is the point I believe stacks up for Sanchez and Hazard, there are concrete demands from top European clubs for these two.
Time will tell if he signs a new deal or not, although Arsenal is not likely to reveal what the new contract is worth, we trust that moles will reveal it one way or the other, and you can be sure we will be bringing you an update on this!
