The Donald Trump Junior Admission of Russian ties: Shrewd move or had no option?

Is this a calculated move?

Donald Trump Junior released a chain of emails on Twitter, detailing the conversation and the eventual meeting he had with a Russian Lawyer, that possibly linked him or the Presidential campaign of his father to the Russian government, this came after several months of either denying a meeting ever took place or downplaying the significance of any meeting.

Donald Trump Jr said in a tweet that preceded the one detailing the conversation that led to the meeting, that he is releasing this chain of emails for the sake of transparency.

The move was expectedly praised by the President.

Perhaps, he really is transparent but this meeting had not been disclosed previously, it is believed that the media would be releasing this chain of conversation soon anyway, so the move by Trump Junior to release it ahead of the media was an attempt to control the narrative or hope to do so.

New York Times ran a story on Saturday 8th July, where it was reported that the Trump representatives and Jared Kushner, Ivanka’s husband confirmed or did not deny the meeting, which stands to reason that it makes sense for the actual detail of the meeting and conversations that took place prior to the meeting to be released by Donald Trump Junior himself.

To do us all a nice favour, the claim of transparency can be put aside, he was about to be exposed by the media, so he jumped.

Now, is there anything new and implicative in the chain of emails and the meeting?

The answer depends on where you stand on the matter all along. On this Trump matter, there is no free-stander, everyone leans to one side or the other!

In the exchanges prior to the meeting, it was made clear to “Don”, Donald Trump Jr that the Russian government wanted to provide him with documents incriminating Hillary Clinton as part of its “support for Mr Trump”.

This is not new, but a confirmation of what was known that Russian government did play a significant role in the U.S election.

It also categorically confirmed Russia’s support for Trump.

The Russian Lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya met with Donald Trump Junior and Trump Campaign to offer help from Russian government in relation to the election

What is new though, it;s the revelation of Donald Trump Jr’s enthusiasm to meet with a foreign adversary.

The meeting was with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer who is on record to be against an American Law that blacklisted suspected Russian human rights abusers, known as Magnitsky Act, a bipartisan bill signed by President Obama.

Putin retaliated by stopping Americans adopting Russian children.

What is the big deal about Magnitsky Act?

It was a bipartisan bill, during Obama’s era, this was not a common thing.

It penalises certain individual from doing business or having a link to the United States, this includes the inability to enter the U.S and freezing of assets held in U.S banks. So this is a big deal.

It is not difficult to see the vested interest of Russia and certain individuals here.

According to the New York Times, Ms Veselnitskaya was formerly married to a former deputy transportation minister of the Moscow region, and her clients include state-owned businesses and a senior government official’s son, whose company was under investigation in the United States at the time of the meeting. Her activities and associations had previously drawn the attention of the F.B.I., according to a former senior law enforcement official.

The importance of these meeting or the willingness of the son of a presidential candidate to meet with an individual that made her intention clear prior to the meeting, stating it was part of Russia’s effort to help Trump, goes beyond just an attempt to undermine the democracy and influence policies on US soil.

The sour relationship between the two countries at the time, and historically made Russia an adversary of United State, to welcome help from an adversary, who at that time had a lot of foreign policies differences, in Syria, Ukraine and Turkey and deep-seated suspicion of each other is almost a treason.

The short term gain of such an alliance is overwhelmingly dwarfed by the medium and long term damage.

The only people that are yet to see the problem of meeting with an external party who has a vested interest in the outcome of a democratic process in the United State are Trump and his loyal supporters.

It can be said, there is no smoke without fire, if there was no skeleton in Mrs Clinton’s closet, perhaps there won’t be something to reveal.

This is politics, there is no saint, if Clinton’s campaign team have access to external help incriminating candidate Trump, even if that external force was an adversary of the US, and has a vested interest in the outcome of the democratic process, of course, they would use it.

Your view on this email revelation and the conduct of Donald Trump Jr totally depends on your preconceived bias. This will only reinforce everyone’s position. the anti-Trump army will read every little line, every little detail and put their spin on it while the Pro-Trump army will be equally out in force to defend their man.

One thing is for sure, this story is not going away anytime soon.

The polarisation continues, the drama that keeps on giving, while all these are ongoing, America is slipping away from world prominence.
