Arsene Wenger excuse
Whole statement in quotes are the words of Arsene Wenger on why Arsenal lost at Stoke.
Shkodran Mustafi’s reintroduction to Premier League football was one of two changes Arsene Wenger made for Saturday’s game at Stoke City.
The World Cup winner replaced Rob Holding in an unorthodox back three alongside Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac, as we slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Bet365 Stadium.
Our defence came under criticism after the match, but Wenger says the trio should not be singled out for our performance.
“We conceded three last week so I changed a bit because Mustafi came back and Holding had lost a little bit of confidence,” he said.
“In pre-season, centrally, we did quite well. When you lose a game, you lose a game, but we didn’t lose against Stoke only because of bad defending on the ball.
“When you have the number of chances we had away from home and you don’t score, you can always complain about the offence and defence.
“We’ve lost one game so I can understand [negativity], but overall I believe that there were a lot of positives in the game. We created many chances, we had great domination, but unfortunately we dropped three points.”
The manager have identified the problem, poor finishing, the window is still wide open, but he is looking to sell before buying, regardless, there is no hope of bringing in someone to complement Lacazette.
Alexis is still desperate to exit the club, if Arsenal manage to lose him, Arsenal will have to endure a season with Welbeck and Giroud, if Arsenal keep hold of him, they will have a player whose mind is elsewhere.
Wenger blamed both the attack and defence for the lost at stoke, but did not mentioned the missing Ozil, this is not surprising as he is not known for singling an individual out.
Arsenal have an expensive liability in the midfield in Ozil, who does not turn up for every game, despite his acclaimed dexterity on the ball, it seems Arsenal is less a player without the ball, while Arsenal may get away with this sometimes, against a determined team like Stoke and other big clubs, they will not.
The chances that Arsene will address these issues before the window shuts is shortening by the day.
It is too early to start the “GET OUT ARSENE” banner, but the performance at Stoke does not fill the fans with confidence.
The lost against Stoke is compounded by the return of Manchester United to excellent form, scoring eight goals in two matches and conceding non, however, the slip up by Chelsea and Tottenham on the opening day of the season makes a consolation for the fans.
