Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud confirmed that speculations linking him to a move away from the Emirate Stadium during the transfer window were true.
Ahead of the clash against the German Side FC Cologne in the Europa league , Giroud said he stayed back at Arsenal only after reflecting on what Arsenal have done for him.
“Actually that was a very private decision, because it’s true that I was close to leaving the club because I said that I wanted to play”
Giroud credited his decision to his team, family and friends and the desire to achieve more with Arsenal FC because as he put it “the story was not over, it was not finished at Arsenal”
Several clubs were linked to Giroud including Everton, Inter Milan and fellow London club West Ham.
Already his place in the team has been put under pressure since the return of Danny Welbeck from Injury last season, the arrival of Lacazette and the failure to sell Alexis Sanchez meant Giroud’s playing time may be limited, but he is determined to fight for his place as the reason he stayed.
Giroud also praised Wenger’s contributions to the team
“He has had a great evolution here and overall the contribution has been tremendous. He has shown I think a very loyal spirit and has a high respect from everybody inside the club, but as well our fans.”
Arsenal meets FC Cologne on Thursday at the Emirate, Wenger is resting some players like Ozil and Sanchez due to their participation in the World Cup Qualifiers.
