48hrs to Spain’s kick-off, the Spanish Football Federation has announced the sacking of their manager, Julien Lopetegui.
Julien Lopetegui was announced as a replacement for Zinedine Zidane as the head coach of Real Madrid, an announcement that took everyone close to the matter by surprise.
The appointment by Madrid, his acceptance and the timing of the announcement are all at odds with convention as every one of the above steps could have been delayed until after the World Cup.
Julien Lopetegui’s conduct may, in fact, reflect his inexperience at this level or bad management by his handlers. The whole situation could have been managed differently, allowing him to take Spain to the World Cup and resume shortly after.
Spain is yet to announce a successor but the La Roja face Portugal on the 15th of June, before playing Iran and Morocco on 20th and 25th June respectively
